Title: Do U Happy?

Media|Acrylic Paint

Size|27cm wide x 34.2

Year of creation|2021

Creator|Linlin

Description of the work|

This work, a portrait composed of striking contrasts and vibrant colors, focuses on a face brimming with complex emotions: exaggerated red lips, pre-sentence, eyes brimming with tears, gazing out at the viewer, seemingly asking, "Are you happy?"

On the left side of the painting, a blocky blue area serves as a textual carrier, with the scattered words "Way out," "High life," and "Ain't Happy" appearing as a projection of fragmented thoughts and life's pressures. The single, distinct drop of water symbolizes tears, perhaps an outpouring of true emotion or perhaps the hidden repression of others.

The hair's lines twist and swirl, symbolizing inner turmoil and self-struggle. The background is defined by three contrasting colors: yellow, purple, and green, each imbued with distinct brushstrokes and energies. Yellow symbolizes the daily bustle and external pressures; purple, deep as night, brimming with anxiety and thoughts; and green symbolizes the inner longing for peace and healing, yet also disturbed by the lines, making true peace difficult to find.

The overall style blends the vocabulary of Expressionism and pop culture, while the brushstrokes, imbued with a childlike playfulness, conceal a deep sense of unease and questioning. The phrase "laughing is because crying" becomes a crucial clue in viewing the painting: when you learn to feign sadness with a smile, has happiness been drained away?

This is not just a painting, but a confession and questioning of inner emotions, the creator's gaze on the tension between his true self and social expectations.

About the Creator|linlin

Linlin is a visual designer and artist. With over thirty years of experience in design and visual communication, she excels at using imagery to construct intersecting spaces of emotion, memory, and subconsciousness. Her work spans graphic design, visual composition, and contemporary art, transforming the sharp visual language honed through years of design practice into a more intimate and poetic artistic vocabulary.

Deeply inspired by psychological layers and states of consciousness, her work often delves into the depths of emotion and the cracks of thought. From the questioning of "real happiness" in "Are You Happy?" to the cat kiss in "Kiss Cat," which responds to Klimt's golden romance, to the metamorphosing, floating structures of consciousness in "Whisper of Vision," her relentless and honest gaze upon the "inner image" is evident.

"MicroDreams" further expands her imagination of microscopic life and sensory dislocation. Using acrylic and fluorescent pigments, she creates a visual biome that defies clear definition—a dreamlike, ethereal, and at once real and illusory.

Linlin believes that art is not simply a result of viewing, but rather a process of resonance between the viewer and their own soul. She invites each viewer to enter these visual channels and encounter themselves.
